Cavity clearance is the process where debris, blockages or old insulating material is removed from a cavity wall. Obstructions are found in a lot of properties and can often cause cold spots and damp issues within the home.
Most houses built in England & Wales after 1930 are constructed with cavity walls which are formed of two masonry walls with a gap between them and held together with wall ties. The construction method is intended to ensure that all moisture that may enter the cavity simply drains to the footings and safely away from the property without ever crossing to the inner wall.
For this to work effectively, the cavity must remain completely free of debris and blockages, as such obstructions can lead to a bridge being created in the air space between the two thicknesses of masonry resulting in moisture being transferred to inner walls rather than draining as intended. Such moisture penetration can cause a range of problems in the home, such as damp and mould issues.
This is why Extract Insulation developed a cavity wall clearance system. This system can remove blockages in a cavity wall, ensuring the cavity operates as it should in addition to preparing it for the installation of cavity wall insulation. It is important to note that cavity wall insulation does not fill the cavity in a way that bridges the air space. In fact, our bead insulation material fills the cavity in such a way that any moisture that may enter the space will trickle down the beads and drain away as intended.
Obstructions in a cavity wall can form for many reasons, including:
The cavity had not been cleared properly during construction.
Building work, such as replacing windows or fitting a conservatory, result in debris being left behind in the cavity.
During general home improvements, such as fitting a vent or balanced boiler flue.
The Extract Insulation system has several benefits:
Suitable for use on most cavity constructed properties.
Resolves existing damp transference issues through clearance of existing debris.
No maintenance is required.
